To be vacated at the election with the retirement of Andrew Fraser, Coffs Harbour has been represented by the National/Country Party since 1927, considered together with the seat of Raleigh which it replaced in 1981. Fraser came to the seat in 1990 and served as the Nationals’ deputy leader for a year after the 2007 election, then moved to the back bench after an incident in which he abused Labor MP John Aquilina in parliament and shoved party colleague Katrina Hodgkinson when she tried to intervene.

Coffs Harbour encompasses the town itself and its neighbouring centre of Sawtell immediately to the south, along with further coastal territory as far as Corindi Beach 30 kilometres to the north.

With the retirement of Andrew Fraser, the new Nationals candidate is Gurmesh Singh, chair of agricultural co-operative Oz Group. Singh won preselection ahead of police officer Darren Jameson, real estate agent Kerry Hines and solicitor Brett Marshall.
