The Coffs Coast Climate Action Group will be rallying outside the local office of GHD today as part of a nationwide week of action by #StopAdani groups.

Multinational engineering and construction company GHD is one of the biggest contractors working on Adani’s Carmichael coal mine project.

Liisa Rusanen from the Coffs Coast Climate Action Group said over 50 companies, including construction giant Downer, had already ruled out working with Adani.

“We are calling on GHD to stand with the majority of Australians who oppose Adani’s coal project,” she said.

“GHD can’t claim to stand for ‘sustainable development’ while backing a coal mine that will fuel dangerous climate change.

“We can see that the climate crisis is here now: across NSW, farmers are still struggling with an intense drought, ancient river ecosystems are collapsing, while massive ice sheets are melting in the Arctic and Antarctic, causing rising seas which threaten our own precious coastal community here.

“We can’t stand by while Adani and GHD destroy our future, so we are joining #StopAdani groups around the country to show GHD we are serious about preventing Adani’s coal mine from going ahead. We’d like to see GHD rule out any further work with Adani.”

The GHD office in Coffs Harbour has been involved with various projects in Bellingen Shire, including the Atherton Drive masterplan development.

The climate action group asked Bellingen Shire Council about its current connections with the company and received the following response from Mayor Dominic King: “We are aware that GHD are proposing to work with Adani on the development of the Carmichael thermal coal mine and railway. This is of great concern to me in a time of Climate Emergency. And we will be considering our options.”

Byron Council have passed a motion ruling out use of contractors that work on Adani’s mine.
